Most regular fans are not going to be completely impartial during the course of a game. A lot of us rowdies generally would side with our Racers, in any situation that at first blush appears to have gone against the Racers. "Clouded judgement" is a term that can easily be used in two directions.įor sure. I guess if we all had to take a turn at it, we might button it up a little I do not believe in threatening a ref over a kid's game, but they better be ready for some ribbing if they can't call it competently. I AM trying to be a little quieter about it this season, though, and just yell encouragement for the team. But, I have no problem calling out a ref when poor or inconsistent officiating is obvious, as DanT can confirm. Many times, we do not get a good view of the contact, or lack of. I promise to try not to confirm your pronouncements upon the unwashed masses in the lower bowl, DanT. I, for one, as one of the "rowdies" would appreciate some replay, to see what actually DID happen. Not all of us in the lower section of 102 are complete neanderthals. Maybe you're letting your judgement get a little clouded. Most of us DO get it that rebounding over a player's back is perfectly legal, if no contact is initiated by that player in the act. It may drive you to distraction to hear a fan call for it (not necessarily blaming you on that it drives me up a wall to hear a commentator use the "downhill runner" term in football), but the fan may be screaming for the call in that way because they saw the player draw illegal contact in that way.

Those terms have been used for years in describing how how the contact foul happened, and it's become part of the vernacular. Not as basketball knowledgeable as you, but I do realize there is no such foul in the rules as "over the back" or "reach in", per se, it's just the action/motion the opposing player is making when they make ILLEGAL contact with our Racer being fouled. They actually think it's against the rules to rebound from behind another player. Fans want "over the back called" when a player for the other team rebounds from behind a player for the team he's rooting for, no contact needed. I laugh myself at the dude behind me yelling “over the back you idiot are you blind?!” but it’s still a pushing foul, just semantics. I guess I don’t see what the downsides are to showing the replay, but I see some upsides. Maybe it prompts them asks a question, look up a rule, or overhear their neighbors talk about why that was the right call. A replay may help educate people who don’t really know the game. Seeing the replay should help them control there bias than relying on what they saw in real time when the refs ultimately make there decisions (assuming they make the correct one). Even though there are a lot of fans that have a low basketball IQ or have big bias is that a reason to withhold information from them? I don’t think so.

The thread is about replays on the video board. When trying to discern if someone knows the game I want to see what they say about offensive sets, defensive systems and rotations, etc. I think there are a lot of uneducated and/or completely biased people in pretty much every gathering of people, but using the phrase “over the back” does not mean someone doesn’t know the game or has a bias. “Strict adherence to law rather than the spirit.” We all know the spirit of those terms even if they are not technically correct in the laws of basketball. And by calling them uneducated and biased, I'm being polite. I'm gonna disagree with the part about being "legalistic." I don't think there is any denying that there are some really uneducated and completely biased fans at the games, and when I say "uneducated," I'm talking about education in basketball.
